Default How big of a pitch range can you get out of your chanters?

Self explanatory title. Perhaps a spiritual sequel to my chanter pitch thread(s).

This is mostly for curiosityís sake, and fascination. I think that I have seen some posts how someone got their McCallum McC2 solo chanter down to 466! Along with the McGillivray Gael chanter going from a wide pitch range about 466 to 475+.

Any incidents/experiment/stories where your chanters would do such a thing?

Thanks.

Once I was playing my Bb chanter in some pretty cold weather and it went down to about 445
also when that happened I found I could overblow the octave up to High C and once I even got high D.

With reed manipulation and a willingness to tape, you can get a good half a semitone plus or minus "design" pitch. I got a standard Warnock chanter down to B flat when it was all I had many years ago, and briefly used the same chanter in grade one band practices. Required a bit of "support" but it could do it.

I have a weather related season variation, on the lower end I run 470hz on cool dry winter days, to an upper range of about 482hz on a humid summer day.

With no wind and a silver sole, I bet I could do 50 yards/meters.

Temperature makes a big difference. My band chanter has played in tune down at 466 without ant intervention when itís been cold. A friend who plays in a G1 band in Scotland came for a visit and his chanter jumped up to 490.

In general I find it hard to move the pitch more than a few Hz without impacting tone.
