Great that you put Eric out there.

Not just his Hollywood things, he played in Grade One bands in Scotland and was PM of the Los Angles Police Pipe Band for a time. Add to that he's a super nice guy and a perfect ambassador for the pipes. I'm sure that a large number of pipers took up the instrument due to hearing Eric on movies and television.

And BTW currently piping in the hit show Outlander.

I have always thought that R S Roddy MacDonald was the best player who never really competed.

D' accord

And I have to say that Jimmy Banks who only competed for a short time is with Bob Hardie (I know he won the medal) one of the best players I've ever heard.

I believe Ed Neigh of Canada and Guelph Pipe Band fame never won the Gold although he was among the top prizes a number of times. His brother Geoff was also a fine piper.

Not sure what famous means, but if you've been on the scene here in California I'd be willing to bet you'd recognize tunes from all of these folks - Lincoln Hilton, Mark Saul, Aaron Shaw, Callum Armstrong, Glenn Kvidahl, Micah Babinski

Donald Lindsay of Invermark fame comes to mind as an excellent interpreter and player of piobaireachd who never won the gold medal at Oban or Inverness.
