Always from people who don't play, but for some reason they think they know everything about it.

"You're too small!"

"You don't need lessons!"

Hmm... Well...

Guess he never saw... or heard... of a Gurkha Pipe Band. (??)

Two pieces of bad advice I was given. (Both by the same person, not surprisingly...)

#1. You're too old, and too short to be a piper. I was 51 years old, and 5'2".
I'd seen 10 year old's piping, and they were half my size. If they can do it, so can I...

#2. I'm also a spinner, knitter, and weaver (Grade 2 spinner, Grade 4 piper...) He said I'd never have the time to learn to pipe, AND do all the fiber stuff, so I needed to quit one or the other.
That one I thought about, and after due consideration, decided he was right, there WASN'T enough time in the day to do both. So I quit housecleaning, and concentrated on the piping and spinning, and I've been much happier...

Back when I was first starting out, my old instructor told me not to get Poly pipes because “they’re not real pipes and nobody takes them seriously.”

Every medal I’ve won has been with my McCallum P3’s!

I've heard many variations of this story, so shall name no names, but a certain piper of very high profile in the early days of the summer school movement went out to give a workshop to a certain band, and the first thing he said was, well, lets get the pipes up and I'll tune all your drones for you.

At which there was much furrowing of brow and the response was offered, oh, no, that won't be necessary, Seumas MacNeil tuned them for us last year.

Maybe the worst piece of piping advice I received was “keep practicing, you will make a half decent piper one day”
