Default U.S. Memorial Day & V-E & V-J Day Piping

Greetings to All,

I somehow thought this the better... here... in
our Beer Tent... than in... History & Tradition...
as we... and world-wide... are now forging new
traditions... in the face of this viral onslaught.

I have been assiduous... in my forming very
new... "habits of mind"... in my playing... and
especially... when ever... outside... :)

PPE... Personal Protective Equipment... always
enshrouds me... when ever... I am beyond my
home. (Just like carrying many extra clips.)

It is known (in some circles) as Medical Asepsis...
and is undertaken... for my hope... and concern...
that I not cause anyone to become... yet another...
medical statistic... and either... living... or dead.

And... likewise... for my own... family and friends
In these last days... I have managed... swathed in
beaucoup PPE... on top of our usual kit & gear... to
play for Bruno Peek's (who helped organize them)
V-E and V-J Day Memorial piping... and now for the
U.S. Memorial Day Ceremony.

These were all played in smaller veteran's cemeteries...
that are geographically "out of the way"... and are quite
usually... without many visitors... what ever the day...

Having done such... along with but one or two others...
in my last two D-Day Memorial trips... I felt that such
would be more in "proper keeping"... than just playing
in my back or front yard. ("For the Celts knew of Old...
that only the pipes... could be heard... in both worlds.")

But before all of that... I practiced... (and always a good
idea... for anything :) ... playing in surgical gloves... and
the more importantly... in a surgical mask.

The gloves are easy... I learned... and the mask?? Well,
it turned out easier... than I first supposed... :)

Find the spot... and make a small hole for the blowpipe...
and then practice (now back to that :) ... and very soon
all shall come 'round right!!... :) (And carry a bit of tape...
to occlude the hole... after you're done... to maintain
the integrity... of the mask. :)

I post all of this... as I greatly fear... and I pray that I am
dead wrong!!... that in the aftermaths (and it is plural) of
these later surges... of this insidious contagion... that our
casualty rates... and what e'er your nation... are going to
look like... The Battle of the Somme... or Agincourt... or
Gettysburg... and I simply wish for as many of us as may
be possible... to play our funeral offices... for the families...
with as much safety... for them... and ourselves... as may
be possible.

Wishing for All... Vigilance... Patience... and Safety...

My friends all know,
With what a brave carouse...

So far all my public observances have been cancelled, so I've covered Easter, the Nova Scotia shootings, VE Day and Memorial Day by playiong on my back porch for the neighborhood. I For Easter, I played Amazing Grace at the appointed time, followed by a medley of other hymns. For The Nova Scotia remembrance, A.G. again as prescribed, then Farewell To Nova Scotia. For VE Day- The Battle's O'er and VE Day 75, then the Navy Hymn, the Armed Forces tunes and God Bless America; for Memorial Day, A Civil War Medley, Flowers Of The Forest, Locahber No More, amazing Grace and God Bless America. I'd like to play for VJ Day, but I'm waiting to hear from the Town or Veterans' organizations as to whether they'll have a public event. I'm not sure sunrise s a good time to play for my neighbors, but I might sign on again anyway.

I'm not sure surgical gloves are necessary as long as no one else touches my pipes. I have played in bitter winter cold wearing a balaclave with a small hole for the mouthpiece, so I know it's do-able.
We'll see how it goes.

Ohh... It's not so much... any else touching my
pipes... rather... it is never knowing... in advance...
what occasion might arise... where I shall touch...
handle... move something... or come into manual
contact with... GOK... (God Knows What)... :)

For me... it's rather akin to going on a road trip...
and taking along... a spare tire. :) If it is not
needed... then so much the better... but if it
is... then it (in this case, they) are already there. :)

And, as I drive/travel places... I always rely upon
what Samuel Goldwyn rather famously said:

"Never prophesy! Especially about the future."

The Old Saw: "Forewarned is forearmed."

And returning home, off they all safely come. :)

Greetings, and all the rest of the customary salutations.

Since there is some informational confusion, misinformation, and open rebellion on the use of face masks to reduce potential contagion; lets just presume most people are disease vectors, and the mask you wear may lower but not eliminate the risks. However person to person, or should I say vector to target, contact appears to be the most common form of transmission to date. with environmental surface contact transmission probabilities being lower.

My self and another piper were at a local Vietnam Memorial on the day Memorial Day is observed. Several appropriate tunes followed by Taps. Maintaining the 6'6" aka 2 meter gap was simple enough.

The day prior I made two short 4minute videos, posted to facebook, with Hector The Hero, providing the main theme, followed by 3 simple words, and then Taps. I was the only person at the Memorial Site, so Social Distancing was quite easy to maintain.

Am I worried about a disease which depending upon circumstances has a 1% to 3% fatality rate? Yes, to a degree I am. More so as I am a caregiver to a 93 year-old. Ultimately depending upon treatments developed and available that can help preserve life things may turn to better barring human nature to be selfish and stupid. But in all the death rate remains the same 1 per person. Take precautions as you deem appropriate, but don't let fear stop you from doing things.
Breaching the peace? What bagpipes officer?
