Default Signature lines

Bob, this is actually a question to you. It seems that sometimes when I change my signature line in my profile, it is also changed in old posts, and sometimes the sig line in old posts remains the same. Is there a time limit above which old post signatures are locked in, or should they always change with a profile change, or never?

If you post a new post into that thread, it will update your sig and your post count. The reason it isn't always persistent is a database matter. It only updates the table when they change, to save process cycles.

I'm not exactly sure what Paul is meaning Cameron. (sorry Paul).

The Forums use their own special cache just for performance improvement with reads. The Forum's cache is normally used for about 60-70% of the threads reads (an extremely high number, a result of our VERY high number of reads relative to the new posts) .. well, as long as a post / thread remains in the server's cache, meaning that nothing has been changed / added (posts I mean), then the new read's data is pulled from the cache only. As soon as things in the thread change - the posts age out of cache, the thread is changed, post added, or cache is cleared by the software, then the thread is rebuilt again (coming from disk), and the new signature line is used.

This is why (I hope it made sense?) you will often see the old and new signature line for a while - until the cached copies are gone from cache, the old signature will remain, because it was in cache - as soon as the disk data is read, the new signature is used.

?? Yikes, a wandering explanation.. I hope it is sort of 'clear'?

Thanks, Bob. I looked back at OLD posts, and by Jove, my sig in them *is* changed (but you knew that). I guess I hadn't really noticed this happening, just that some of the old ones in a thread had changed and some had not (reason: were still coming out of cache). This makes things much better, since my somewhat unusual(?) sense of humor does lead to misunderstandings now and then unless I am vigilant about these sigs.

We said the same thing, Bob. I was avoiding using the term cache, as I didn't think that would be clear to someone who wasn't familiar with the term. I suppose upon rereading what I posted, I didn't really help things!

Thanks, Bob.
