If I understand, it sounds like you are doing well. You don't want to be identifiable in the band. So if you can hear yourself, then so can the PM and an audience or judge and you are not blending.

Maybe there is a confidence issue - you don't feel comfortable just playing the tunes you know if you cant hear yourself.
And how to practice for confidence is a great topic I would like to learn more about.

Thanks for the responses to all.

I guess I will just soldier on (not like I really have a choice). I'm going over to my PM's house later today for a lesson, I will try playing a duet and see how that goes.

Sounds like this is not uncommon, I will just keep at it.

Keep in mind.....if you play wrong notes or miss the dot(s) ....both of you will hear it......if you can hear your drones ...they're likely no longer in tune.

... then, the first time you all go out and play on grass, instead of the practice hall, you can suddenly hear yourself and THAT can be a source of consternation as well until you relax and have confidence in yourself.
