Default Downton Abbey piper, part 2

We were watching an episode of Downton Abbey season five, I think it was episode nine. They had a dinner scene where this gentleman was playing the small pipes. Does anyone know who this is? Or is he an actor pretending to be playing? It was a very short scene, this is the best picture I could get.

Sorry to those that do not have Facebook, this is the only way I could post the picture. I can not put attachments directly for some reason.

My guess is that it's Richard Butler on Northumbrian Smallpipes and Janet Bennett on harp.

A quick Google suggests Matt is 99.9% almost certainly correct.

On a TV show or film, sometimes the person you see playing is the same person you hear playing.

Even so, the person is pretending to be playing during the shooting.

A set during a shoot is an eerily quiet place. In the film you might see a roomful of people in a pub, the background buzz of conversation, clinking of glasses, a band playing, and so forth.

The set during the shoot is total silence. The band's music, the background conversation, the clinking of glasses is all added later. Yes the musicians are pretending to play, the patrons are silently mouthing their conversation. (They're extras, if they had speaking parts you'd have to pay them several times more.)

There are professionals whose fulltime job is to provide the background conversation. They go into the recording studio and just talk.

Why all this silence on the set? Because they want to get a clean recording of the dialogue being spoken by the actors. Even so, oftentimes the actors go into a recording studio later and voice-over their own dialogue.

So the piper would have been silently pretending to play, perhaps fingering along with "playback", a recording that the musician has made in the recording studio prior to the shoot day.

Some 44 years ago I was in a four-piece jazz band (tuba) that shot a commercial for The Ground Round Restaurants. We were to play "Bill Bailey" for exactly 29 seconds, which we did on the second take. After that we remained on stage, miming and mugging to the recorded 29-second take. There were two actors from New York on the shoot, one portraying a waitress carrying a pitcher of beer ( she had no lines to speak), the other was seated at a table hand had one line to say " The Ground Round, a great place to bring your family" ( or some such). all the other people in the shoot were employees of The Ground Round- waiters, waitresses, bartenders, cooks, managers, etc. (we were the House band). They went through several takes with the actor's one line and eventually just cut it. I expect someone else did the voice-over. The band got residuals for two years from that commercial- $18 every 6 months
