MacLellan mouth blown studio pipes with home made cane drones and Abbott chanter reed. It's a strange set up, but a side project I'm tinkering with.

Was this an old pipe chanter cane reed that you shaved down, or a plastic PC reed?

I do, in two sets. N 1 is an early SSP in cocuswood, ca.1780, the reeds are old cane reeds, no idea how old, I found them in a vintage lot, but they work. However, the setup takes time to settle due to moisture, and I never play the pipes longer than for a few minutes as they are liable to crack. The other, dated 1854, came with a set of cane reeds that had not been played for decades but which are still working, though difficult to keep in tune. Patience is rewarded in both cases by a nice buzzy sound.

Let me get this right ... you have a set of small pipes from 1780 and 1854?? Are you kidding me??? Do you know how cool that is?? That's freaking awesome.. you have to post some pics of those

Ive bought a set of Walsh retro pipes and they sound great but after playing them I couldn't help but wonder what a cane reeds would sound like in those pipes ....I did some research and found out Chris Apps is making a Cane reed for the Walsh pipes ... I've ordered one and I'll let everyone know what they sound like and how they respond with the water trap system in those pipes.
