Default 62000 Poppies Tune Writing Competition

62,000 Australian men and women died on the battlefields of the First World War. To commemorate their service the City of Queanbeyan Pipes and Drums is proud to sponsor a bagpipe music composing competition. First prize is $600 (Australian). Second prize is $300 (Australian), and third prize is $100 (Australian). The rules for the competition are as follows:

1. The winning composition shall be called “62,000 Poppies”. The runner up tune will be named “The Man With The Donkey”. The third prize tune will be called “The Heroes of Hamel”.
2. Submissions must be original to the composer(s), and not have been published anywhere before, including via electronic media.
3. Submissions must be specifically written for solo bagpipe or pipe band performance, and must be sympathetic to the 62,000 Poppies commemorative theme.
4. Only one submission is allowed from each composer(s).
5. Submissions must be sent electronically, attached to an introductory email with the composer’s contact information, and be received by midnight on 19 May, 2018 Australian Eastern Standard Time at the email address: qbnpipeband@gmail.com (19 May is the 103rd anniversary of the death of Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick, otherwise known as the Man With the Donkey and who is a significant Australian national icon).
6. The musical score must be submitted as a PDF file labelled “62,000 Poppies Contest”, with no indication of the composer’s identity. The score must be generated by computer in a recognizable arrangement format. Hand-written scores or notations on the computer-generated score are not accepted.
7. Submissions must also include an audio electronic file (MP3) of the composition played on pipes or practice chanter, with no voice or identifying markers. The MP3 file should be labelled “62,000 Poppies Contest”. The player on the audio file is not required to be the composer(s).
8. Composers will retain all copyright, but by entering the contest all composer(s) agree to grant the City of Queanbeyan Pipes and Drums free right to play any or all scores in public performances, and/or publish any or all scores in a music collection with full attribution. All composers should therefore also specify an alternative name for their composition. The City of Queanbeyan Pipe Band may also choose to donate a hard copy of the score, or scores, along with audio to the Australian War Memorial or the Queanbeyan Palerang Council for display.
9. Composers must have the ability to receive monetary awards from the City of Queanbeyan Pipe Band by PayPal account.
10. The score and audio entries will be catalogued, provided individual identification, and sent under blind cover to a panel of judges.
11. All decisions made by the judges and the City of Queanbeyan Pipes and Drums are final. No correspondence of any type will be entered into.
12. Results of the competition will be announced to each of the composers during June 2018, and announced to the public on 4 July, 2018, the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Hamel.
13. The prize will be distributed within 30 days of the announcement of winners by PayPal payment.

Please circulate and repost these competition details widely.
