Default Low G won't sharpen

My Low G is always flatter than the rest of my notes. I've tried raising and lowering the chanter reed, but no luck. My tuner is the "Braw Bagpipe Tuner". Do I need to start filing the Low G holes?

There are 2 answers:

1. Your chanter maker is infallible. Waste time and money finding the perfect reed. Only succeed after spending an order of magnitude more on reeds than you ever did on the chanter. Or, having failed, move onto answer 2.

2. Yes, there are better things to do with your life than play out of tune and wait for reeds to come in the mail.

Having assumed you are competent in tuning your chanter to the drones, consistent with just intonation, of course.

Put some tape across the very bottom of the chanter (at the bell, not the tone holes) at the edge. Sounds counterintuitive to use tape to sharpen a note, but it works.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the Braw Tuner app and it seems to have an Equal and Just temperament setting. If you are on Equal temperament, low G will ideally show at 31 cents flat if it's in tune. If you have it set to Just (bagpiping) temperament, it will show on the line.
I know it sounds silly to ask, but a quick check of the setting might save you a chanter.

Does it actually sound flat, or merely 'tune' flat on the tuner?

Do you ease off your blowing when playing the Low G? - quite normal to do that.

If not:

When your low G is flat, you will have to move the the sound holes CLOSER to the reed not more far away!

So:

Undercut the tone holes!

Before undercutting the holes, try the tape across the bell. I’ll try to get a pic of what I did. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Remember when you use tape, you are altering the length of the vibrating column of air, which is what determines pitch. If you tape the end of the chanter, you are stopping the termination from moving past the end of the chanter, so it's becoming shorter - and thuis sharper.
