Sometimes is needs a little pinch. Sometimes a lick. Sometimes a poke. Sometimes a squeeze. Sometimes, it's just good to go.

I find that some makers use harder cane than others. On those reeds, pinching them doesn't accomplish very much. On reeds that are a little softer, it can make the blowing-in process a bit easier. Just don't overdo it to the point where the reed gets thin and sharp. Ridge-cut reeds seem to often need a little moisture and a little pinch, IME.
