I bought my first set (second hand catalin MacPherson's, plain combing, ivory sole chanter) GPB 30 in 1973 (at: Celtic Crafts in Thames Street near Eton Bridge, Windsor, Berks.). Awsome sounding drones that now belong to a fellow piper and still take me up.

My first stand of pipes was a full ivory mt ABW, that cost my parents 148.00 back in 1963 or 64. They came from John Kirkwoods Shop in ST Cathrines Ont.

I know of at least one set of full ivory ABW Henderson pipes bought for $150.00 in 1952. I guess the first owner must have gotten screwed based upon the other prices you guys have reported!

Imagine- paying $150 for a set of ivory Hendersons...

I got my silver/ivory Robertsons in Sept. 1953. I believe the price my parents paid then was $154 US. We have certainly added a few zeroes since then.

Rich Sandy is a good friend of mine, if you really want those pipes identified and you're sure they came from him in that year I'd be happy to pass the pics on to him and let him have a look. I'm sure he'll know.

Set of Grainger and Campbell in 1976 cost my parents $300, which in retrospect were a little high. They bought them from Scottish Products between Park and MAdison Aves.

maybe its just me, but does any one else notice ABW to have particular smell. i know it sounds wierd, smelling chanters and all, but Ive noticed the Abw chanters i use smell particularly different from the rosewood pakistani ones. Hope maybe this is a helpful idea in figuring out what theyre made of.

Hmmm , I.D. pipes based on where and when they were sold. These forums never cease to amaze and astound. Even the Pakistani's in 1957 are better than most of the crap on ebay today !

Pricewise, I got a new set of Henderson pipes in African Blackwood - wood mounts and german silver from the College of Piping in 1963 that cost $85.00 U.S.

I will post my 2 cents here, since I can relate to the topic. It is quite likely that they are ABW, and then some. The Hendersons I am playing are full ivory, and back in the 1950s, my grandfather paid $100 for them.
