Default old set of pipes, opinion please

Hi,

I've been asked my opinion an old set of pipes...

before I start posting photographs.... I'd like to know the likelihood it is a set of ABW set of pipes...

All I know for sure that it was bought new from Sandy Hain's shop in Cleveland, Ohio....

in 1957 for $150... (I have no feel for prices versus ABW pipes, vs Pakistani back then)

thanks in advance

Iíve just gotten a discount on a large consignment of stale adverbs and adjectives and am trying to use them up as quickly as possible. Paraphrase Donna Andrews

Hi, Richard: I have a lot of guys in my band whose pipes are from that time period. All are ABW (many are Hardies, Hendersons and Robertsons) and many are full ivory or silver/ivory.

From what they've indicated, that price sounds about right for that era, even with these mounts. Shocking, isn't it?

It's quite possible. A beginning piper I knew in 1958 bought a set of silver & ivory Pakistani pipes new for $50 that same year. Believe it or not, Pakistani pipes were being sold in some drugstores in Canada back then. Don't know about the U.S. Also in 1958, I paid $50 for a set of used Hendersons with imm. ivory and nickel silver mounts, my first pipes.

I was in Sandy's shop more than once (Gaelic Imports on W. 25th St.) and I don't recall ever seeing Pakistani pipes being sold from there. Nor does Sandy strike me as one who would sell Pakistani pipes for what would have been an exorbitant price in that day. (As a former PM of the 1st Batt. Black Watch, I'm not sure Sandy would have handled Pakistani pipes at any price!)

Yeah, I don't see much of a discussion without pictures?

In 1957 a set of pipes that cost $150 should at least be mounted with full ivory. In 1964 a half-silver and ivory set ran $250; a full imitation mounted set half that or a little less.

In about 1967-68, I bought my full ivory ABW Lawries with 2 wool bag covers, wool cords, and exra set of reeds for about GBP79.0.0 (incl shipping to US)

If the GBP was about $2.10, then they were about US$166. that was a princely sum at that time.

According to this website: http://inflationdata.com/, the US$ inflation rate (US Consumer Price Index) from Aug. 1957 to Aug . 2006 has been 620.49%.
All things being equal, a set of pipes priced at $150 50 years ago is equivalent to $931.5 of 2006.
Which is below the truth for a 'starter price' bagpipe from a reputable maker today...
