I noticed the play list from the Masters MSR consisted of nine tunes for each piper. Were all nine tunes played as M-M-M, S-S-S, R-R-R?

The Masters played:

Urlar,
break for water and re-tune,
2 marches, 4 strathpeys, 4 reels,
break for water and re-tune,
J/H,

Forgive my ignorance. Were I more familiar with the history and traditions of the Dan Reid competition I would not be bringing up these issues.

1) Seems those marches are a bit heavy by comparison to the two-parted strathspeys and reels.

2) The P/D article mentioned that the strathspeys and reels were somewhat obscure.

Is this typical for this competition? Must've been one heck of an incentive for competitors to learn obscure tunes in an oddly weighted format.

Might a more traditional format be more attractive to these professionals?

I think the fact that this is NOT a traditional fomat brings musicians of this quality back year after year. I might be wrong, but I don't think Ozzie has a hard time finding competitors to attend this event.

The competition is in a very intimate setting for no more than 100 attendees, and the formal dinner cannot be matched, in terms of cuisine and ambiance, or entertainment (the masters come back in to each play tunes of their choosing).

Frankly, it's this format that brings me back to the DRM time and time again. Ozzie spares no expense to put on one of, if not the most premier piping events in the US (not having been to all, I'm being a bit presumptuous).

The obscurity of some of the tunes is what makes this such a unique event. You can pick up any CD, or listen to any number of piping recordings, and hear the more common tunes. I think Ozzie and his staff do a wonderful job of selecting music we don't normally hear in the 'mainstream' pipeline, and yet make it a worthy challenge of these musical gladiators.

If you're anywhere in the western hemisphere next May, this event should be on your calendar!

I spent a few minutes grilling one of the competitors on the format this week because I was a bit curious about it too.

He loves it. Says it's obviously a taxing marathon both physically and mentally...let alone trying to manage the pipe over that time. I actually expected him to criticize the format a bit, but I was wrong. Certainly the real deal in terms of a high level contest.

Also says the intimacy and the dinner are a nice cap.

I skimmed the competition website after posting and have come to a better understanding - quite an evolution over the years.
