This morning at 06:00 I played "When the Battles Over" at the Cenotaph in Arnprior, Ontario, Canada, dedicated to the fallen in the Great War of 1914-1918. It was -7C (19.4F), clear, calm and dark. The sun is just rising now. There was just me and the memories of the fallen.

Three of us played this cold, windy morning at the cross of sacrifice near the battlefields park in Quebec City. A few other of our band mates played along from their home.

Our band is playing at the USS Iowa at 1100. Just can't do the 0600 thing!

BTW on this day 100 years ago the battle was far from over for my grandfather. He had been listed as MIA for five months, since the battle of Cantigny on 28 May 1918.

The war ended, months went by, and still no word back home (Winifrede, West Virginia) about him. Everyone presumed him dead.

What no-one in the US military knew was that he had been picked up on the battlefield by a French unit and when the war ended was still bedridden in a French hospital recovering from his numerous wounds.

After the war had been over for a year he suddenly appeared, in full uniform, to claim the hand of his fiancÚ.
