I'm curious as to Carnegie Mellon's points breakdown as the according to the EUSPBA website, Grandfather got nothing less than 3rds and was only one point below St Andrews. Does the EUSPBA remove a challenge-up competitor from the scoring and move everyone up a point? CM is not even mentioned in the Grade III scoring. I would assume they would have at least been mentioned, even if they don't receive "Points".
Last, WOW, CM took 8th in drumming in their Grade IV comp?!?! What happened? |

In the spreadsheet with the order of play it said they were playing in the g3 event for comments only.

Ok, interesting since Bill's post said they took 3rd over Grandfather Mountain.

Those were the results announced on the field. At least, after the announcement of them as first and then a retraction after they collected the award.

I don't think Grade 4's are permitted to challenge up to Grade 3 per EUSPBA rules. They can play for sheets if permitted by the contest officials.

They are. We did our last year in Grade IV. And, McMillan-Birtles changed us last year and we received points for beating them.

This is copied and pasted right from EUSPBA rules:
Bands shall compete only in their assigned grades, except as follows: Time permitting, games should make every effort to permit Grade 3 bands to challenge Grade 2 bands, and Grade 2 bands to challenge Grade 1 bands, provided they meet all of the requirements of the higher grade for that day’s contest. Bands will be awarded points toward year-end standings in their own grade only. If a band wins prizes in both grades, games are permitted to award only the higher of the two monetary prizes. |

I'm not going to argue what the rules state, and that was the rule last year as well, however exceptions have been made in the past, for example:
EUSPBA Competition Results The Meadow Highland Games Celtic Festival The Meadow VA 10/29/2011 Pipe Band Grade IIIMedley (2 Bands) Judges: Piping-David M. Bailiff, Marc E. DuBois; Ensemble-James M. Bell; Drumming-Jonathan P. Quigg; 1. Greater Richmond P & D 1-1-1-1 2. MacMillanBirtles Memorial PB 2-2-2-2 MacMillanBirtles is a Grade IV band. They have a Grade III, band but they did not show so the Grade IV band challenged us and the EUSPBA obviously allowed it. We challenged up their Grade III band our last year in Grade IV. Now, Carnegie Mellon may have just "played for comments". And, maybe this year they are being more strict with the rule. Maybe, the judges did not know they were playing for comments and intially ranked them in the competition and once it was discovered that they were just playing for comments, they were removed from the scoring, hence the discrepancy between the on-field announcement and the EUSPBA website. |
