Default The iconography of PM Evan MacRae

When I went to piping school back around 1980 our head instructor was Pipe Major Evan MacRae, long of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders.

What's strange is how often images of him show up on Ebay: postcards, tea towels, rubber stamps, etc etc.

They all seem to be based on this photo, taken in the period 1945-1959 when the Cameron Highlanders pipers wore Royal Stewart tartan. This photo is still being widely sold in Scotland as a postcard:

This image has been recycled as a stamp:

and on this tea towel, where they stuck a feather bonnet on the poor fellow's head!

and this ceramic has too many similarites to the top postcard to be coincidental:

Indeed a collector could amass quite a bit of stuff based on that top photo alone. (I think I saw a miniature spoon once with that image on it.)

I think PM Angus MacDonald of the Guards also has a long list of iconography as well. Still see many PCs of him in full dress.

P.M Evan Macrae was an individual whom , I am told, had the features to have been photogenic enough to have been a film star. It may be this which has made for the iconography

I was taught from scratch by Evan at school from the mid 70s.
He was a fine teacher, a real gentleman and an excellent piobaireachd player.
He deserved his Gold Medal at Oban in 1982.
I still miss him and think of him every time i walk onto a competition platform. I'm sure he is watching.

I still see that postcard in some of the souvenir shops here.

Iain.

For whatever reason, certain photos of Cameron Highlanders pipers from that c1945-1959 period have remained popular.

Here's a postcard, and an oven mitt derived from it. I've also seen tea towells with this photo on them.

I recently came across a postcard of PM MacRae at a local flea market. Was going to buy it until I looked at the back and saw it was $20!

I met the man in the mid sixties when serving in the Liverpool Scottish and you could not fail to be aware of the respect he was held in. I came across a Piobaireachd dedicated to him by his Pipe Sergeant, Joe Massey on Chris Eyre's Website here

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I just came across this needlepoint which is a careful rendering of the photo in the top post:
