Panceltic piper, I think you've hit the nail on the head. I had the habit of shoving my pipes as far as they could go under my arm after the strike-in. I tried leaving them a few inches forward as you mentionned, and not only weren't they in contact with my neck anymore, my wrists were also much more relaxed. thanks!

Then there's the other extreme, having the bag far forward, so the drones and chanter are steeply angled back. That doesn't look comfortable to me, but some very good players play like that.

Here's a guy with the drones steeply angled but the chanter isn't so bad. Must be a long neck on the bag.

(Note that the tartan bag-cover is cut to the bias.)
