Easy tape trick to help you birl!
I've gotten great feedback already on this little taping trick to help your birl and thought I'd share it here. I think we can all agree anything that can help this rather tricky embellishment is useful! LINK

Yes, though you're also moving the centre of the hole slightly higher up the chanter, which will counteract the effect of the smaller hole being flatter. I should think it's pretty marginal. But I presume this isn't being proposed as a long-term fix!

As I state in the video, it does very slightly flatten the note (any reduction in the size of the hole will flatten the note, though not as much as taping the tape side of the hole).
As for permanent, it depends on the the chanter. I remember the old early McCallum chanters with the huge oblong holes for the bottom hand. I had to keep the tape on there to have any chance of fully covering the hols during my birls given my relatively small fingers/hands.
