Default The making of a painting of pipers:

The Detroit Institute of Arts has been doing conservation and restoration on the 1566 oil-on-panel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, "The Wedding Dance."
In the video, you can see how infrared scanning reveals the drawing/underpainting and how the piper's hands are moved a bit in the final work. If you ever go to Detroit, make sure to go to the DIA and see the work up close (not too close or the guards yell at you).

There's a woodcut from 700 years earlier, in the St Blaise manuscript.

For paintings the earliest are from the 13th and 14th centuries.

During the Renaissance bagpipes were commonly played in western Europe and there are many illustrations.

If you are ever in DC, there is a great painting of a piper to see in the National Portrait Gallery, and it is free to get in. And oh yes, we currently have Lord Stanley's Cup.

DaveB, I've always liked that painting. Someday, I'd really like to go to the national portrait gallery. Any other piper paintings, there? The third floor of the DIA has a lot of Flemish and Northern Renaissance galleries and a surprising number of them have pipers.
Congrats on the Caps win. Too long a drought. Sadly the old photo I had of me with my pipes, Stevie Y and the cup has been lost.
