Default Thoughts and experiences on-line lessons

Ok this may have been asked before so excuse me if this question is redundant. Iíve taken lessons in the past but unfortunately my instructor stopped teaching and Iíve been in a lull for a few years. I would like to get back into lessons and considering on-line learning. Please share your thoughts on on-line learning; experiences, worth it, not worth it etc.Ö

Many Thanks

I took lessons online for about two years and have only stopped because of work.

Once I had an appropriate location and the technology sorted out, it all came down to the teacher. I had an excellent experience: picked up new, challenging repertoire; got excellent advice about setting up my instrument; improved my technique.

At the time, I was after the best quality tuition I could afford. Using Skype was not a drawback.

My son and I have been using skype lessons for about 6 months and it works quite well. You can troubleshoot as well and the best part is that YOU have to do it as your instructor talks you through it. Rather than some instructors who will just fix it for you.

If you find a good instructor, it should work for you. Since you're not geographically limited, your choices are almost limitless! Try it for a few weeks and I think you'll see the advantages over traditional, local lessons.

Good luck!

It's all about the technology...Skype works great but you need to make sure you have a quality webcam.

I am happy to publicly recommend Neil Clark at http://www.falkirkpiping.com/

I have been taking lessons with him via Skype for five years and can't say enough good things about his teaching.

I took Skype lessons from Matt Willis for a couple of years, but had to stop due to life issues getting in the way. :-) I found them to be VERY effective since he could see my fingers and critique on the fly. One thing to make sure of is to have a solid internet connection. He and I had a few instances where my wi-fi signal caused some distracting lag.
