Default Gibson Fireside pipes

This is in regards to the Three Drones, and tuning the middle E drone. I have no issues with the high and low A tuning, but for some reason the E drone always seems off to my ear. Has anyone else felt that way as well or experience problems with the E drone? Currently, I have the center drone corked off internally and am considering ordering a Low A drone to replace it with. That said, I am courting your opinions on the drones for the firesides, and asking what issues and opinions you may have.

Thank you.

Does it sound off in specific tunes or even when you are just playing low A? If the former, it may be because E doesn't generally sound right behind Dmaj tunes, which so many piping tunes are.

Best regards,
Kevin

Can you get it in tune and stable with the chanter removed and the stock corked?

If playing in D you could tune the baritone drone to D

Are you tuning it by listening to the interval with the A drones, or with the E on the chanter? Are you sure the E on the chanter is in tune with the tonic?

Piper Q,
I'd be interested to know what you did to get it under control. I also have a set of firesides that I intermittently have a hard time dialing in the baritone such that it sounds right. Hitherto, my explanation has been that my breathing/pressure is inconsistent between playing and tuning.
