Default The Struggle

Can anybody help me locate pipe music for a hornpipe called The Struggle?
Working with a drummer, I have transcribed his drum score onto Celtic Pipes. It would be interesting to add the pipes, but I have never heard (nor heard of) this tune.

Such a great tune.

In a related story, I was leaving Stirling Castle last week and heard an unmistakable voice. Turning my head, I saw Mr. Pincock arranging some of his students for a photo. They were in town to play a concert.

Thank you, Patrick and John. Not that I need an excuse to buy the Scots Guards book (volume 3) but I will get it next week.

I now have the Struggle figured out as a hornpipe, thanks to the Scots Guards book where it is written as a reel. Unfortunately, there are only two parts. I now wish to figure out the third and fourth parts (as played by the Battlefield Band). Any suggestions?

The only other book I’ve seen it in is “Something Blew” (I think). I’m traveling but will check when home for the number of parts. You could contact Mr. Pincock.

Just checked in Dougie’s tunebook. It’s called “The Gem So Small”. The Struggle is a two-part reel. Same as Scotch Guard III and Forward With Scotland’s Past. Two part reel.

As on track 3 of Battlefield’s album “On the Rise” they only play 2 parts of it as a reel (no repeats) three times through.

Google hasn’t shown me any other instances of the tune being recorded by them. What recording are you refering to where you hear 4 parts?

Temple Records made a compilation disc in 1986. I got it from iTunes.
The Best of the Battlefield Band
Track 8 has The Pilgrim's March / Scarlet & Black / The Struggle / Struy Lodge (which sounds or is played like it could be parts 3 and 4 of The Struggle)

Perhaps I am just chasing a red herring, but this whole project started out with a 4-part drum score for a hornpipe called The Struggle (for which there was no 'pipe music). It is possible that parts one and two just get played again, but the drum score shows each part repeated and I can't imagine playing a tune in this manner.

Don't kill yourselves with this one.

That track is taken from the album I mentioned above.

Perhaps it is for a different tune since The Struggle by Dougie Pincock is most definitely a two parted reel, or they got the name wrong, or played another tune following it but didn’t mention its name, or the piper misremembered the name.
