Default The reverse hands challenge

Self-isolation might be taking its toll, but you are hereby challenged to video yourself playing a tune with your hands the wrong way round and post the result.

This is hilarious. As soon as I saw this I ran to get my chanter, holy cromoly it's impossible! Until today I never noticed that my top and bottom fingers don't rest in the same relative place on the chanter: my left hand sits comfortably with the holes beneath the distal knuckle/pad of the fingers, the right hand covers the holes almost near the second knuckle. This is necessary in order for my pinky to cover the bottom hole.

When I reverse position my bottom hand is way too far out, I can't even cover the low A hole. This is going to take some work.

I'll be back in a few days with my rendition of Scot's Wha Hae. I need a bit of practice.

PS-Well done Calum, that's pretty darn good for playing in reverse!

HAH! Been doing that for years... Never could play with my hands "correctly." Always played right over left, and I'm right handed, too..

With me, it depends upon the tune. Slow aires were easier.

I can play Scotland The Brave, but really slow.

It's good to do, to remind yourself what it's like for beginners.

This is similar to an exercise we do periodically in fencing: fence left-handed if you're a righty (or visa-versa). It takes away your muscle memory and really makes you focus on what you're doing.

In the early '90s I was staying with my band in a U. of Glasgow residence for the worlds. Staying there also was a band of mostly young people from N.I. and they won grade 2. At the after party at the res these young pipers were well lubricated and wound up to the utmost and playing like crazy. I remember one chap playing some reel and halfway through changing hands. Then a couple of them did a two handed number, one playing the top hand and blowing while the other reached around him to play the bottom hand. Couldn't believe it, but then I was 30 years too old even then!
