Default EUSPBA Championships @ Glasgowlands

Contest is coming fast!

Can anyone confirm that grade 4 bands are playing both QMM and Medley at this event?

I don't have confirmation, but I know that a bunch of people are also looking for information. Grade 5 bands don't even know what time they play. With the contest so close, and some bands coming as far away as Virginia, it would be nice for them to know what time to show up.

The EUSPBA website says "EUSPBA Championship Rules (2010 rules coming soon)"

As chair of the Southern Branch of the EUSPBA, I have mixed feelings about this so called "EUSPBA Championship." By not offering any travel money, this contest pretty much excludes over half of the geographic area the EUSPBA represents. As a piping judge who is familiar with the standard of playing in this ignored area, there are several grade 3 & 4 EUSPBA member bands who would give any of the Glasgowland entered bands a serious run.
On the other hand, I think it is great that the EUSPBA is doing something special for the grade 1 & 2 member bands. I just don't understand why the tune requirement rule for grade 1 is NOT being followed (only 1 medley instead of two submitted). Does this mean the only grade 2 band entered will be allowed to challenge up? If yes, can they walk away with their already guaranteed 1st place grade 2 prize money as well as the 3rd place (or higher) grade 1 prize money?

Take note EUSPBA, you have a chance to make everyone happy. (which is rare)

If this the the accurate prize money set aside for the championships. Why not take the Extra $6000 and split it amongst the Grade III, IV, and V contests. With one Grade II band and 2 Grade I bands paying there should be $6000 to split up from the 2nd and 3rd place Grade II contest and 3rd place in Grade I.

Or thats $200 travel money for EVERYONE. (if I did my math right)

List of bands from their website.

Grade I
Oran Mor Pipe Band
City of Washington Pipe Band
Grade II
Stuart Highlanders
Grade III
NY Metro Pipe Band
Ulster Scottish
Capital Region Celtic Pipe Band
Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band

Worcester Kiltie Pipe Band
Grade IV

Cape Fear Highlanders
Catamount Pipe Band
Colum Cille Pipes & Drums
Crann Tara Pipes and Drums
Highland Light Scottish Pipe Band
Inis Fada Pipe Band
Martin Duffy Memorial Pipe Band
Mohawk Valley Frasers Pipe Band
New Hampshire Pipe and Drum
Rory O’Moore School of Piping and Drumming
Schenectady Pipe Band
Stuart Highlanders
Grade V

If we take the 3rd place prize from Grade 1 ($2000) and 2nd and 3rd place from Grade 2 ($2500+$2000) AND add the $150 each band paid ($150x23=$3450) (I'm not counting the Grade 5 bands because the EUSPBA is not offering them any money). If we add all this us we get $9950.

by the way: the EUSPBA announcement has said "More details will be forthcoming" for several months. other than order of play, are there any other need-to-know "more details" forthcoming before Saturday?

Southwest Branch does not have a representative......

a) because there is no Sanctioned Band competitions in the Southwest so there is not a Southwest branch Champion.
b) it is to costly for any bands to have to travel to the East Coast

Why not offer the competition to move around to other branches and make it affordable for more bands to have the opportunity to compete.

Spot on Sandy. The Championship should move around and be held at different venues around the association. Hopefully, future venues will see the value of having the best bands gather to compete and they will bid for the honor of hosting.

As for prize money, but no travel money, bands often spend $50,000 or more to go to the worlds for FAR less prize money and no travel money. If you create a prestigious event, people want to go. If the prize money is top drawer, then it means that quality is rewarded.

We wanted to provide a high level competition opportunity for our top bands prior to their excursions to Maxville and Glasgow. State dependent preparation. A band can practice, and practice, and practice, but what they get good at then is practicing. Competition opportunities bring it into focus, and help prepare for being good at competition.

ORDER OF PLAY?

Where did you find that? I don't see it on the EUSPBA site or on the Glasgow Lands site.
