Default The Battle of the Somme

July 1, 2016 marks the centenary of the first day of the long, bloody Battle of the Somme.

The famous tune is credited to the great player and composer William Lawrie of the 8th Argylls. He did not live to see 1917, dying of wounds and illness.

Here is a photo of the view from Lawrie's grave I took last month. The view includes the Pap of Glencoe, which is a name of one of his wonderful marches.

John, Many thanks from the land downunder. What a peaceful place he has to rest forever being remembered by a great tune!

Great photo, John. The title was given to that tune after Lawrie died. After I read several histories of the Battle of the Somme it is difficult to play it as anything other than a lament. What a terrible waste of life.

Hi All,
Just curious John.
Is that the Church yard at Balachuilish?
Beautiful place.

Yes, and we had a really nice day there, too

His was a prime example of the waste. Imagine how many compositions he didn't get to write.

Great player, too. Double gold in 1910. He didn't receive his fatal wounds at the Somme, but in 1915. Trench warfare.

He was quoted as saying that trenches were no place for a pipe major - living in a hole like rats.
