I thought I'd pull off something different at the Sgt's. Mess dinner by playing a 1950's vintage Hardie blackwood chanter with a big old ivory sole. A nice, rich, warm sound for in and out the head table and MacIntosh's Lament. I did find a slight issue with the wide sole knocking against my mounted badger sporran initially.

Ah, Dave,

I... too... have an early 50s ABW chanter... made by Bob. :)

And... ain't it grand?!... Ain't it just!! :)

And... since I began... this Great Waltz-About... and there
were only... the great dish-plate soles... I have always been
comfortable with them. :) (My newer chanters do not have such.)

Trusting that the Sergeant's Mess Dinner went swimmingly
well for you... and your 50s Hardie chanter... filled the room!! :)

With regards,

Pip01

1) 1940s Lawries:
-Begg sheepskin
-no MCS
-Moose valve
-McCallum band chanter with Megarity reed (480+)
-Kinnaird tenors, EzeeDrone bass

2) 1940s Starcks
-Gannaway, no zip, no collars
-no MCS
-Moose valve
-McCallum Bb chanter with unknown maker moulded reed (466)
-EzeeDrones all around

Both setups require no strike-in, you cannot get a bad strike-in no matter what you do.

Naill drones
Ezeedrone reeds (also love the Xtreme but can't get the tenors to tune high enough)
Early Shepherd Mk3 chanter
Shepherd reed
RG Hardie flexi blowstick
trapdri and bottle trap
WMC Bannatyne

I'd love a sheepskin but as I work away for weeks on end its just not going to happen.

Do the x-treme reeds have hollow pitch screws?....if yes close off the open end of the screw with a ball of blu-tac. They are lovely reeds IMHO.

Yeah they do, I tried that but I obviously made a porridge of it by using to much blu-tak. I'll try again, as above thanks.

Xtreme bass is amazing, but found with my pipes it worked best with the Xtreme tenors, so I was sad when i couldn't make them work

#1 set (solo): Naill drones, Xtreme tenors (with Blu-Tac in the screws), MG White Mamba bass & Strathmore chanter with G1 reed

#2 set: Grainger & Campbell drones, Xtreme reeds throughout, McCallum band or Bflat chanters depending who Iím playing with. G1 reeds in both at present. Tenors swapped for long Ezee tenors to play with the B-flat chanter.

I quite like those Xtreme reeds...

Bag standardised across sets as Bannatyne hybrid (WMC) with Bannatyne canister system.

...howzo?...you only need to take a bb size ball of the blue-tac and mash it into the open end of the screw.
