Default Cock of the North

Does anyone know who wrote this (was it William Marshall by any chance?)

Thanks

Thomas

I searched in several sources, but they all say 'traditional'.

I know, but that is the trouble with a lot of pipe music, if it has been around for more than about three weeks and non-pipers can whictle it, it tends to be classed as traditional.

William Marshall was a fiddler and wrote a lot of strathspeys and reels and his patron was the Duke of Gordon (the Cock of the North) so I just wondered if anyone knew anything? This may be better suited to the History forum.

I think Cock of the North is descended from an old English tune called Joan's Placket is Torn aka Jones Placket is Rent, which was once played on the trumpet to express derision! It was recorded as being played by a Dutch trumpeter when Charles II flagship, The Royal Charles, was abandoned by it's crew in 1667. It was then captured by the Dutch without a shot being fired, and the tune played from the stern of the vessel as it headed towars Holland, according to Pepy's.

It was first published, AFAIK, in the 1686 edition of Playford's "Dancing Master". The tune is also known as Jumping John and Jumping Joan.
Growing up in the Grampian region, I only ever knew it as "Auntie Mary".

What is "AFAIK"? Cock of the North is a good tune I should dust off and play more often.

As in "had a canary up the leg of her drawers"?

Had a lass come up when busking in DC and I was expecting "Can you play Amazing Grace?" as was usual but got "Can you play Auntie Mary?" instead which I cheerfully played.

Ian

PS just discovered that my reprint of Playford is based on the 1651 original edition so it doesn't have Jumping John and Jumping Joan" -bummer!
