Default True Story

Daniel McCaig, a worker at the Bombardier aircraft manufacturing plant in Toronto was annoyed at the move to lay-off 130 workers. So, dressed in his kilt, he hoisted himself three stories into the air on a crane and serenaded the factory with his bagpipes. He played Auld Lang Syne and other favourites for four hours - and responded to requests for particular tunes from his cheering workmates below. Afterwards, the company took him to court, claiming that the work stoppage had cost them C$200,000. However, the judge, exercising a considerable amount of "amazing grace" dismissed the case so long as McCaig did not serenade the Bombardier factory again. McCaig was helped by five law students from York University in Toronto who drew up a defence based on "constitutional ethnic issues."

Seems to me he was trespassing.

Bill Shakespeare had the right idea about lawyers.

Found this online about this:
Quote:
Court Releases Unrepentant Bagpipe Protester
TORONTO (Reuters) - A Canadian man who protested mass layoffs by playing the bagpipes high above a factory floor was saved by a little amazing grace this week after a court refused to convict him of mischief.

Daniel McCaig, 25, was arrested inside a Toronto factory one year ago after he hoisted himself three stories into the air on a crane, unfurled protest banners and blasted
out repeated versions of Auld Lang Syne and other Gaelic folk songs. The kilt-clad McCaig, who also took requests from cheering employees during the unusual four-hour serenade, was angry the owner of the factory, transportation manufacturer Bombardier Inc., had moved to lay off about 130 workers.

McCaig, an experienced mountaineer, was eventually plucked from his rooftop perch by police and charged with mischief over C$5,000.

Bombardier said the protest had forced a temporary work stoppage and cost the Montreal-based company C$200,000. An Ontario court, however, allowed McCaig to go free on a peace bond Tuesday provided he did not break out the
bagpipes near the Bombardier plant anytime soon. I forced them to confront the issue, said an unrepentant McCaig, who now works as a tow-truck driver. I wanted to communicate to Bombardier that what they were doing was wrong.

Despite the advice of several prominent defense lawyers, McCaig steadfastly refused to plead guilty for fear that a criminal record would haunt him for the rest of his life.

His cause was finally adopted by five law students from York University in Toronto who crafted a defense based on
constitutional issues.
Now, the date of the article is . . . April 1, 1999.

But then there's this (dated January 15, 1999):
http://news.google.com/newspapers?ni...g=5988,7038657
Which says the event took place "a year ago".

There's a comment here 10 years later from someone claiming to work in the American division and that the story is true:

Back then, a piper was willing to go to the ropes for labor. Now Labour is disinterested in the needs of pipers.

Searching the Google News Archive is not as easy it used to be, but in this spirit, a picture from 1980 to add to the collection of worst drawn bagpipe sketches ever:

Well, one of them looks like a Yank and the other like someone from the Far East - what do they know about piping?
