Default NATO Fanfare vs STB?

OK, this is no $#it. There I was, piping my brains out yesterday in Kabul. Pipes are sounding GREAT, I'm feeling good, and I'm doing exceedingly well in the standards of the gathering crowd (doing ok to my own standards). When allofasudden, this guy walks up between tunes and asks, "Can you play the NATO Fanfare?" Being the rather worldly dude I consider myself to be, I'm taken slightly aback, as I'd never heard of any NATO Fanfare, let alone THE NATO Fanfare. I said, "Can you hum it? I might know it by a different name." He gets this big grin on his face like he's got something on the piper, and starts in on Scotland The Brave. Dislpaying my stellar vocabulary, I said, "Nuh uh!" He then proceeded to tell me how NATO had adopted it a few years back, looking rather smug.

I've not been able to confirm this in my meanderings thru the interwebs. Can anyone shed some light on this (to me) mystery?

Well, you know how there are only really two bagpipe tunes, Scotland the Brave, and the other one. Maybe he just got confused about the "other one".

Interesting, interesting. I'd heard there were only three pipe tunes: STB, Amazing Grace, and that other one.

You might be on to something here though...

NATO doesn't have a 'fanfare', and its anthem sounds nothing like stb.

My understand has always been that "that other one" is Scotland the Brave.

Most people who have heard bagpipes recognize the tune, but I find that hardly anybody knows its name.

When I was at university in the states in the 70s, and in a pipe band, it was often called "the old spice song" by members of the public. Although when the tv advert was pointed out to me, it almost sounded more like Whistle O'er the Love O't played for the Seann Truibhas dance, but not quite.

I always thought that this was the old spice song.

Fair dues to anyone that can get a pipe band to sound like that.
