Default Jaw Pain - Piping

Have been piping approx. 40+ yrs. Never had Jaw pain, have the type of blow pipe that is oval with silicon cover (air stream?) Never take notice of the names.

Just recently developed discomfort left Jaw joint. Does not hurt while playing only when I open my mouth.

I don't believe I am a biter as such. only bottom but slightly.

Does piping cause Jaw problems? I'm not going to stop playing, simply interested to see how common it is before I go exploring other reasons.

Any advice would be great. Have read some on forum. but did not feel I feel into the possible causes.

It might be that your blowpipe or mouthpiece got turned a little off of optimal and your jaw is angling to compensate for that.

Does it hurt only after playing?

Does it hurt all the time, but not when playing?

Where does it hurt? Teeth? deeper?

Do you clamp down on the blowpipe, or just use your lips?

Does the condylar process (where it hinges to your skull) hurt, or someplace else on the jaw?

If I were you, I'd visit my dentist to see if there were some tooth problems in the making.

Piping for 40+ years without discomfort is curious.

Keep us informed.

Good luck mate!

When you're not playing, does your jaw click or pop when you open it? It may be that you've either recently begun jaw clenching/teeth grinding when you sleep, or the years of doing it are finally catching up. Playing the pipes would exacerbate this if you tend to bite down hard on the blow pipe.

I agree with RJB, a trip to the dentist wouldn't hurt. They can look at your teeth and see if you've been grinding or clenching. You might also experiment with using either thicker padding on the blowpipe (like plastic tubing) or taking off the silicon and using nothing at all.

Greetings, Super Gran,

Being waay off in Kiwi Land... it is almost impossible to
even begin looking for possible reasons... much the less
any possible diagnosis... and remedial medical solutions.

However... I would suggest... a curved mouthpiece... with
a ReedWrangler ergonomic mouthpiece at the end of that...
which will then put the blowing and business end of it all
directly... into your mouth... and on the same line as your
teeth... and your jaw line. (It is very comfortable... and has
helped many a piper with teeth/jaw difficulties... and some...
even... and only... to extend their playing time. :)

This... and all by itself... will ease any undue strain from a
regular blowpipe and mouthpiece that you may have... and
may well... help to reduce your present symptoms... until
you can receive a proper diagnosis and remedial care.

Such has helped many, many a piper, and shall help many

Please let us know how you are doing.

Best Wishes,

My friends all know,
With what a brave carouse...

Make sure to practice slow tunes while focusing on not biting with your upper, and lower jaws. Make sure you are just sealing with your lips. You should invest in an oval mouthpiece. This can make the lip seal easier.
