Default What's your least favorite type of gig?

I'm always glad and thankful to have a gig, but this evening was the type of gig I hate. The Noisy Decoration/Strolling Minstrel type party gig. Cavernous location where a 105 decibel chanter reed all but disappears and barely anyone listens.
Kind of makes you feel like poo as a musician.
Still, can't sneeze at the pay for an easy half hour.

Actually, gigs where you've no place to warm up, and even if you did, you end up standing around for an hour before they want you to play, then you just KNOW your instrument will sound like ass.

There is no option for ALL of the above.

I selected parades, only because as a solo piper, I don't do many. My least favorite would be any where the majority of the audience are drunk. That can get uncomfortable rather quickly.

Greetings to All,

I hit the corporate button... as there is (usually) less
personal interaction with and in those... than there
is with... and in... the others.

I actually like... all of them!! :) which is why I play. :)

Well... funerals... you know... not "like"... but I am
grateful to be there... and to be able to be...of some
solace... and service... to the family and friends.

As noted above... not having a place to herd all of
our wandering piping ducks back into... their proper
row... before the strike-in... is always challenging...
but that's all just a part of... The Piping Game... :)

Wishing for all... Good Luck!!... with engagements...
and conditions!! :) (And even the drunken pubs...
can bestow their enjoyments!! :)

Regards to All,

Pip01

Funerals would probably be my "favorite" because I feel like I'm doing something helpful. The don't call me The Grim Piper for nothing. ;)
I wouldn't mind weddings so much if they came with less micro-management and months of calls from Bridezilla or her mum with "...just and idea".
Parades are a rarity for me since leaving band life, but I don't mind them in moderation...and away from the fire trucks.
But the corporate thingy...WOOF!

No question: long parades in hot weather. Just miserable.

Ironically, both of these apply at St Patrick's Day parades (at least the ones I've done).

I chose parades...clear #1 for me...the other options are way down my dislike list.

I do one parade every year, as "the Band" for the Hull Firefighters on Memorial Day. I have done a few other parades solo: the Boston St Patrick's Day Parade as "the Band" for the Boston Gas Pipefitters Local when they were on strike against the Gas Company, once in the NYC Tartan Day parade when the band I was supposed to play with for the 10th division of the parade ddn't show because of the weather, so I was their "Band". I actually enjoy the Hull parade and enjoyed the Tartan Day solo outing. That St Patrick's Day was cold and sleeting, though.

I'm a bit of an outlier here perhaps because around half my gigs are uilleann pipe gigs.

What is your least favourite is akin to my all-time favourite type of uilleann gig: sit in the corner and play background music for an hour or two.

It's awesome. I can play whatever I want. Nobody cares. Due to the low volume of the uilleann pipes, the only people who can really hear me are the ones sitting closest.

What always happens is that somebody, or a few somebodies, will pull up their chairs and listen. It's the best, because the people who are interested can listen, and I'm not annoying to the rest of the room.

I usually don't play just the UPs, but rotate between UP, SSP, and Low Whistle.

Next favourite are the uilleann church gigs where I'm playing some preservice music at a funeral or wedding. Likewise I play whatever I want, more or less, and rotate between various instruments.

Yes there will usually be a request or multiple requests, but the UPs can play anything.

Also fun are the GHB mini-band gigs where we march in, play a few tunes, and get out.

Less fun for me are the solo GHB gigs where I'm "the show", whether it's a funeral, wedding, church service, or what have you. Wait an hour to play for one minute.

What I detest most of all are parades. Well that and playing for the Drum Major contest at the Games.

You didn't have an option for Session/Studio gigs. There was a time when those made up the majority of my gigs.

You don't have to dress up. You show up, play whatever is on the page (usually with a click track) and get out. Best of all, there might be residuals.
