Default Oil before repairing a crack

A bandmate of mine has a crack in his tuning pin. It hasn't gone all the way through yet, but I'm wondering if he should Oil his pipes before filling with epoxy. I imagine the oil might help the wood swell and close the crack down, but will the epoxy bond after a fresh coat of oil? Thoughts?

I’d suggest taking the cracked part to a pipe maker to have the pin whipped or replaced. Filling a crack with epoxy is just a recipe for more cracks.

Is it a surface crack?...nearer the top of the pin where condensation would collect during cold weathe playing..and then maybe left all plugged togethe4 overnight.

If a surface crack I’d try a bead of liquid krazy glue on it...can’t hurt....tapping with a hard wood block or similar to help vibrate the liquid in a bit. You would use some painters tape to mask along the edges of the crack for a neater job. When dry scape off excess with a sharp utility razor edge.

Don’t clamp.

Yes super glue is your friend here as per above post , but I wouldn’t oil first as that could prohibit a good bond .

Hi all,

I would give a good spray with a citrus degreaser too!
