Default Smallpipes and Guitar

Favorite songs for smallpipes and guitar?

Playing for a friend's wedding this year, we are trying to put together some tunes. It's a laid-back affair, so open to anything.

Let's hear the people speak!

This is a bit difficult to answer. To me most of them sound great with a good guitar player playing slightly more than the minimum chords for a tune. Road to the Isles, Skye Boat Song, The Earl of Mansfield etc. all sound good. The only tunes that don't sound great to me are little reels with very basic chords (e.g D, A, D, A, D A...). Not to say they sound bad, it just doesn't add much in my opinion.

My only other suggestion is to try the tune with and without drones. Sometimes the chords are either a bit dissonant or get lost in the drones.

I am not a guitar player so hopefully someone who knows better than me will weigh in soon.

Good luck, it sounds like fun.

If you want some ideas, check out the Thistle Piping Demos by Julie Brinklow and Clare Miller on Youtube.

Here is Song for the Smallpipes, which is very nice.

My wife and I play a smallpipe/cello duet of this.

For reels and jigs I think the important thing for the guitar is to not hammer the downbeats.

Great suggestions everyone! Love all the videos posted.

@Barry y'all sound great!! Will have to check that book out- Play it like you Sing it, correct? I've got a couple standard music books (Scots Guards and Gordon Duncan) but not that one yet.
