I've been asking on the History Forum about Piping Pigs and had fascinating replies. However, I am wondering if anyone here knows specifically about the Piping Pig statue in Queensberry Street, Dumfries. I know there's one in Melrose and elsewhere of course. But what was behind the Dumfries one ---who's idea was it --why Dumfries ---when was it installed there --by whom ---- and is there any reference to it anywhere ? I'd really appreciate any leads or information. My friend is researching for a new book, and it would be fabulous if the piping pig got a mention!! Thank you

The Bagpipe Society's journal, "Chanter" has hosted several articles in the past about piping pigs. One is at http://www.bagpipesociety.org.uk/art...es-pigs-plato/ (scroll down a bit to find it). I recall several others with photos from various cathedrals but that would take some searching. All their past journals are on-line (except for the most recent two years—available only to members) at http://www.bagpipesociety.org.uk/cha...agazine/about/ Worthwhile reading even if you aren't a pig fancier...
And there is the related quote attributed to Alfred Hitchcock, “I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equaled the purity of the sound achieved by the pig.” Best wishes Steve
