I can hear both. It depends on which system I'm listening through although through my Bose noise cancelling earbuds I hear both depending on which way I turn my head... Not really. With the Bose, I hear Yanni from my ipad and Laurel from my Android phone...

Snopes has a good explanation.

From theverge.com article:

"What you hear — everything you hear — is shaped in some way by your previous experiences. This is most obvious with music, where training makes it easier to identify component parts of a symphony. So just like in a noisy cocktail party, your brain is filling in what it doesn’t quite hear, based in part on what you expect to hear and what you’ve heard before."

I wonder, in our context, if this is a factor in judging a performance in a competition, or in tuning, and so on.

As I understand it, there is no word "Yanny". The recorded word is "Laurel" but it is heard as "Yanny" by some folks.

I hear Yanni. The whole phenomenon is fascinating - that two people can listen to the same thing and hear completely different words.

Since I do have some slight midrange hearing loss. and have listened to the sound clip through several different speakers, just to see how they recreate the sound I heard both Yanni and Laurel. However, no my laptop with an noisy AC running a few just over 1 meter away I heard yanely.

But then again, a few more pints of proper beer, and this Gifted Idiot of a Piper won't give a Rat's Arse about what the electrobabble is.

Cheers all!
