In looking at my Apple Watch after I play, my heart rate never really increases during a 30 minute practice session to the point that I do more than 2-3 minutes of “exercise”. Calories burned is usually less than 50

Thanks, all!! I appreciate all the ideas and suggestions. The reason I ask is that I'm in a diabetes prevention class. I have no signs of the disease but my mother has type 2 diabetes and I'm pudgy so I thought the writing might be on the wall... Tuesdays are long days with work, then driving up to Fargo to get together with a friend before band practice, thus no real time to exercize during the day. Piping really warms one up, even us chilly millies, so I thought it would be good to have something to put down in the log for those days. I was delighted the other day when I pulled on my work pants and discovered they were just too big!! I agree, RJB, that sometimes getting the muscles toned can make a big difference. We pipers do have that going for us and planking, I feel, has helped my playing as well. Anyone who plays the pipes or drums can't be too much of a slouch!! Blessings to you all

Excellent work.
Knowing what you're doing (exercise) and knowing what you're eating is huge. You can't adjust it if you don't know it.

Recording it is a huge accountability thing.

Plus, it's fun. It became such a game for me to measure that stuff. And little, achievable goals were huge. A goal of simply, documenting food for the week was huge. Every achieved goal comes with satisfaction. Satisfaction promoted continued efforts.

For me...I enjoyed playing soooo much more. When it's not "as demanding" playing is more fun. Enduring a 2 day festival is more tolerable. Just more enjoyment when I wasn't wishing I was on the couch.
