(As an aside to our Moderators... I think of all this... as being
"Piping Related"... as I would like as many of us... to survive...
as may... prove possible.) (And drummers, too!! :)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings, green piper, stephanie, paul, mac and... to All,
(I can't quote all of you as I am still an I.T. monkey with a cello. :)

Kindly rest assured... that no disparagement was ever perceived...
and no offense... was ever taken.

To quote an old (about 100 years ago, or so) bit of writing:
"From the flint and steel of divergent opinions can come the
spark of illumination."

From an earlier Post... I had referenced... an international
vid... given by a respected health care professional... who
was... and again... re-emphasizing... our ever-increasingly
dire need... to effect... and maintain... a public and social
distance of 6 feet (something we can all fathom :)... and to
stress... the need for protective kit... and hand sanitation...
and during her vid... she quite inadvertently... kept touching
her face...

And when was that? Several days ago? (That Old Rascal
Time... now being a bit of a jumble... for some of us... )

Since then... and every day... the... and our... world-wide...
medical... public... infected... and death rate numbers... have
but grown... more and more... and any end to it... seemingly
far... far... away...

And... every day... the medical/social recommendations of
what to do... and what not to do... changes... a bit... due to
the and our... ever changing... and ever worsening... state...

And... likewise... the need for those... not yet infected... to
use effective kit... and to re-kindle their vigilance... in their
washing of hands and faces... and their use of effective
and sanitizing hand wipes... on all of their possibly (and read
probably) ... contaminated surfaces... becomes ever the more
important... and for us all...

As I made reference before... if we are all now standing about...
with a grenade... with the pin already pulled... we most probably
should not... hold on to it... for much longer...

We... all of us... are now all in... this same old leaky boat... and
I simply wish to see... as many as is possible... survive...

Wishing for Increased Vigilance... and Good Health... for All,

Pip01

As a retired Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician/Hazardous Materials Technician I could write a treatise on wearing Personal Protective Equipment. Needless to say, for many of us if we are Social Distancing properly, much of PPE use we see in public is superfluous. Add that when worn or used improperly, or improperly discarded it adds to the overall risk of cross contamination and exposure to infectious agents.

If masks are recommended for the general population due to risk of aerosolized infectious matter, dispose those properly; and for goodness sake if you need to sneeze;leave the mask in place for the protection of others. Aerosolized droplets and travel easily 20 feet or 18.5 meters at speeds of 40 Miles per hour or 64 Kilometers per Hour.

Wash or sanitize your hands as soon as you remove gloves. Improper glove removal increases risk of cross contamination as well does improper disposal.

However for many of us, risk to self when playing the bagpipes away from others is probably quite low. Until proven otherwise.

Well.... to add to this discussion, CDC are now recommending the use of face masks when out in public.

Happened to find a beat-up N-95 mask in my tool box and wore it at the grocery store. If I have to play my pipes in public, Iíll need to design drone masks.

The video is from Lothian Pipes in Dunedin FLA. In the responses, he replies the gloves are the powder free variety, and are used when setting up and testing a new set of pipes to ensure no finger prints on the parts.

Northern Tools, Harbor Freight, and most Auto parts stores in the USA will sell both Nitrile and Latex Gloves the Nitrile are generally thicker and chemical resistant. Latex will rapidly break down under many of the harsh solvents used in the Automotive repair industry.

But again unless you are Howie Mandal or an extreme Germaphobe just normal washing of hands is all you should really need to do. As for modification of a N95 or KN95 mask, to receive the blow pipe just defeats the effectiveness of the mask.

Once and Again... Greetings to All, :)

And, well... having started all of this... and just
back on the 30th of March (Just seems longer...
doesn't it? :) ... I shall jump back into this now
bubbling... bowl of piping porridge...

Let me put you a case... and it's about kit... and
numbers... rather than... anyone's... opinions...

And, yes... the U.S. office of their CDC has now
changed their thoughts and recommendations...
about face masks... but... that does not change
the efficacy... of any mask.

So now... let me put you the case... about the least
efficient type of medical mask... now being highly
sought: the surgical mask.

* There are two people... Joe and Steve... facing
each other.. and both wearing these masks.

* Joe on the left... sneezes at Steve on the right..
* Approximately... 50% of those droplets, etc., are
retained by Joe's mask... and the other 50% now
are hurled towards Steve.

* Because Steve is wearing his mask... (and again...
and only approximately) ... 50%... of that 50%... is
caught by Steve's mask... and thereby reducing his
chance... of droplet contamination... to 25%.

Granted... not the best odds in the world... but a 75%
reduction... is a great deal better... than... 0... :)

The point is... the kit... saves lives... :)

Now... "Push come to Shove"... as it is now presently
doing (and it is... going to get a great deal worse)... if
masks are not available... bloody well make your own!!
(We are... usually... a quite handy lot. :)

And... failing that... the wearing of a doubled bandana...
and especially if it is moistened... will help you keep in
abeyance... those airborne contaminants... :) (Giving
rise to that historical question; "Who was that masked
man?!" :)

And now... as I always say... everyone may do... as
they bloody well please... but I really would... like to
see... as many of us as possible... survive... :)

Regards... Best Wishes... and Good Health... to All,

Pip01

A Quick Post Script About the Previously
Mentioned Matter of Funerals:

And, yes, if called... I shall go play... if a
safe manner is possible... and available.

And, safe for the mourners, and for me.

We but wish to honor, and memorialize...
and not... add to the count...

There is absolutely no reason to HAVE to play in public.
