That's very sad. Truly one of the greatest pipers. RIP

Very sad news indeed. Donald was indeed a master piper with an unmistakeable sound. Condolences to family and friends.

I exchanged letters with him once. I actually have a copy of "Marion's Hornpipe", composed by his brother Alister, written in Donald's own hand.

Time to frame it, I think.

Unfortunate news. However, Donald was 90 years old. That's longer than most of us make it. Moreover, what a storied piping 'career'. His name will be spoken for generations to come. That's another feat most of us don't achieve. Time to celebrate his life. His CDs still receive regular rotation in my piping playlist. "Salute to Donald" tonight for sure...

Many comments will be made about Donald's immense piping abilities. My own particular memories will be of Donald as a person - he was quite possibly the nicest man it has ever been my privilege to meet. My thoughts are with his family.

In 2006 and '07 I had the honor and privilege to sit for two long lessons with Donald. To say those sessions were inspirational would be an understatement. And I quite agree, he was a kind and gentle man as well as a consummate musician.

In '06 I was also lucky enough to attend an event at the College of Piping, in which he was interviewed in front of an adoring crowd and then gave a recital (at 84 years of age). He played "Too Long in This Condition" with such beauty and grace...it was the one and only time that I've cried when hearing a performance. Unforgettable.

I was privileged to be in the company of this great Man twice, once as part of a show for the BBC at Queen Margaret Drive Glasgow many years ago, 1987, where listening to him play "Mary's Praise" he converted me to loving Piobaireachd. The second time years later as his driver in San Diego where the next day he was judging and that night at the black tie dinner, hearing him play the ground to "Lament for the Children" on Gordon Walker's pipes, he came into the large room making his way slowly past the dinner guests playing and if it didn't move you, you had no soul.

On both occasions he was most gracious, kind and I'll never forget how he was even humble to a fault. Such a very great Ambassador for our music. This past weekend I heard my good friend Willie McCallum play the ground for the Children and Willie you did me in again. This was at the Pipes Sticks 66 Concert in Pasadena where Willie gave a poignant dedication to Donald MacPherson and an explanation to the story behind this piobaireachd, as Willie put it... Donald MacPherson was the Greatest Competing Piper of the 20th Century.

RIP

Hamish
