Default SSP Drones

I have made cane drone reeds for lots of SSP. Most with a bass and baritone at the fifth have the same bore in both drones. I would like to hear more bass. Is there a reason to not have a larger bore in the bass?

Here's a thought: on many SSP, the bass and baritones have the same bore, which makes the sections interchangeable That allows one to remove the middle section od the bass drone to use as a second baritone, or tune to D ( or tune BOTH to D when swapping in a D chanter).

Makes sense. I see why they are the same. The reeds are often interchangeable. It does leave them lacking in bass though. We bored out the bass on a poly set that only is played in A. Big improvement in bass.

The reed sets I've seen have had baritone and bass of definitely lengths. That may not be true of all makes, of course.

As I understand it (I'm no pipemaker) that if you used a bigger bore on the bass, to get more volume, the drone would have to be rather longer.

So maybe it's a space-saving thing, having the narrow bore bass.

I think the interchangeability of drone parts is the reason, rather than saving space. I found the set lacking in bass to my ear.
