Default Archy J, India’s 1st Pro Female Bagpiper

Published this week...
Meet Archy J, India’s First Professional Female Bagpipe Artist

Here's her Thunderstruck rendition:

This is how I first heard about Archy a couple years ago:
Shipping Up To Boston/Enter Sandman - Bagpipe Cover (Goddesses of Bagpipe x The Snake Charmer)

(With Chelsea Joy—from here in California—and Jane Espie.)

Nice to see some female pipers kicking butt and getting some recognition!

As much as I enjoy her covers, it's nice to see her starting to do some original stuff!

Each to their own, I guess. She seems pretty popular in India . . . maybe I'm part Indian . . .

Here's my take on it- I have yet to see or hear a live clip of any of the three young ladies actually playing. The sound tracks sound very electronic and heavy with instruments not seen in the clips, making these the imnstrumental equivalent of Lip-syncing. It may well be that all three of them are accomplished, talented pipers, but from the videos, it appears to confirm they are talented dancers, at least.

She is a talented musician and I enjot listening to some of her stuff however until she finally started playing a gaida I wouldn’t call her a piper, as it is a lot different to play the bagpipes vs. red pipes. But that is my take

As usual the misogyny is causing ripples beneath the surface.

It's difficult to tell what exactly it is about Archy that causes a certain type of person, often a Facebooker, to break out in puce-faced horror, but it's noticeable these people seem to have a lot less to say about pipers who are not female, Indian, playing electronic instruments (or who are good musicians, for that matter). Though maybe her real crime is to find an actual audience for her music.

As for "real bagpiping", you don't get to make that comment until you can do better. On anything.

Actually, we can comment and have opinions on anything we like, and until you walk a mile in our shoes you don't get to label anyone else's comment as misogynistic or any other negative connation. We are entitled to opinions, and unless it has reeds and you have to blow in it, it is not a bagpipe as far as I am concerned, and that is hard to argue otherwise.
