Other forums I frequent have 'like' buttons, where a person who agrees with the sentiments expressed by another forumite can 'click' to say they agree.
Just curious, why not here? |

I read your post, thought, "Yes indeed!" and went to click the like button.
Thanks for the weird, recursive ride! |

Mike Greene will have to answer this one. I also would like to have a "Like" button.
As far as I know, it's not a feature in the version of the forum software that we are currently running here. It would involve an upgrade to the system. While Mike gets a little money from ads, he has a real job and a family that keep him busy. Any income from ads is minimal and doesn't really cover time and expenses that Mike has running BDF. The rest of the moderator team is 100% volunteer—myself included. We'd have to convince Mike that the time and effort (and headaches) to upgrade would be worth it. Andrew

To clarify, my time is 100% volunteer as well. Advertisers pay for the server hosting fees that the forum software runs on. At one time I fiddled with the vBulletin "reputation system" which is pretty much what you are referring to. I had it in place but it never gained any traction and requires a fair amount of configuration to have it work properly. There is a "facebook" integration feature that I believe started with v4 (we're on v3) and I do have a v4 test system running (the data in that system is close to 6 years old now). vBulletin is now at v5 and there are a few hurdles to overcome to bring the forum software current (even to v4). Those hurdles have been significant enough to make this a pretty involved project.

Fair enough! Thanks for the explanation Mike, as well as your time as administrator. It doesn't go unnoticed.
