Default MacDougalls?

A friend of mine in London just went to get his Great Grandfathers stuff. He was a Piper in WWI. The reason I'm posting this here is because his pipes where there with his stuff. They seem to be MacDougalls with the stamp 'MacDougall Breadalbane' on them.

He just sent me these photo's, I'll try to get more. Where's the best restoration outfit near London?

Thanks!

Tucker

London as in United Kingdom? By far the best pace to take them would be to David Naill & Co at Minehead in Somerset. Les & Martin Cowell are master craftsmen with plenty of experience of top quality restoration work. Check out their website for examples of this.

I recently had occasion to have some work, albeit minor, done on my vintage Henderson's which was undertaken perfectly.

Minehead is a three hour journey by car or train from London but the trip will be well worth it for your friend. Or alternatively he could send the pipes by courier if the travel is an issue but I'd recommend that he visits in person to collect them for the experience of meeting these master craftsmen & seeing them at work.

How much restoration do they need?

While it is hard to tell from the photos, would some new hemp and a new bag with a quick rub of Mr. Sheen, get these back into decent shape? Then some gentle playing over a period of a couple of weeks revive them?

Given the anticipated age I am surprised (if) they are nickel slides ? Or German silver tho not enough shine.
Hard to figure from the pix....pewter color like old nickle might ....but I don't recall seeing many old sets as this with nickle.

Thoughts?

These pipes are Duncan MacDougal pipes.

...wonder if the pipes closed up and acclimizing in a brown paper bag ( a poor man's humidor) with a dampened kitchen sponge and forgotten for a week or two might be more gentle before finally playing. The sponge in a plastic zip bag partly closed.

They don't seem to be in need of drastic repair, really from what could tell they are in pretty good shape. I suspect they would play fine with a new bag, chanter and reeds and not much else.
He's in UK London. Not sure where in London, it's big.
The slides look like nickel, he says there's no hallmarks. Could be silver plated brass? But I think nickel.
He was thinking about donating them to the Regimental Museum, I said donate them to me.

It would be a shame to put them in a museum.

That would be good...but expensive and time consuming.....you'd have to buy a round trip flight to London to collect them....break off the ivory with a hammer...then fly all the way back home with them.
