Default What does your band do for fun outside of playing?

Outside of regular performances and competition, what does your band do for fun?

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of 'we have a ceilidh!'

I try to make the group very 'family' and unified.. We work hard at practice, but have fun as well. At the end of last season, we went to Universal Studios in Orlando!

At the end of the competition season we have a ceilidh (used to be a more formal ball but had a hard time attracting enough people I guess) and get ready for the next season which starts a few months later. The WUSPBA season is long - February through October. We donít always do the first and/or last contest, but we want to be ready for them either way.

Greetings to All,

Of the five regular, though non-competition, pipe
bands in which I have played... four had regular
band activities... such as a formal "Dinning In"...
at least twice a year... as well as some less formal
dinners... and just plain ol' regular "get togethers"
for fun and frolic... and add a couple of picnics in
to the trough... :)

And all of which... served well for the cohesion of
the mobs, :)

Great Fun!! And I recommend such!!

Regards to All,

Pip01

As soon after Burns Nicht as possible, the Boise Highlanders would host an all-hands pizza party. This was not only for the members but for the families as well for their support.

When I was Pipe Sergeant, we began an annual summer picnic, again for members and their families. Great fun! Burgers, brats, beer, the works. Horseshoes, croquet, chess, badminton, volleyball -- everything EXCEPT piping!

Both events were pricey, but we were fortunate in having a pretty good treasury at the time, and volunteers were never in short supply. I don't know if either of these are still active -- I retired from the band some years ago. But it was a wonderful way to relax, have fun, and learn about each other outside of the pipe band context.

Over the years, the best-playing bands I've been involved with haven't had social events. I suppose they figure you go to band events to play music and outside of band time you go about your private lives.

The poorest band I've played in did all sorts of things like pool parties etc. Socially it was a fun band to be involved with. Musically, not so much.

- Concert: Several of us went to see Gaelic Storm in Chattanooga last year. A group is already growing for this year's performance.
- Baseball: Some have attended the Chattanooga Lookouts game.
- The diversity of the band and the fact that most have to work and nurture families often hinders other band activities. It is a reality well-known to most of us.
- Christmas party
- Invitations are issued via our app...no real requirement to participate.
- Some of us track our friends in H'burg.

I've generally found this to be fairly common as well - it's hard enough getting the band together to go on the road, and management bandwidth is limited. That said, I think doing one or two events with friends, family and alumni is well worth doing for all sorts of reasons.
