Default Flapper hinge...up or down?

To fit with some other idle conversations...whom of us places their flapper hinge at the 12:00 position ..or the 6:00 position"? ..and why.

Ive been told by one excellent source..”...this ..xxx..is the way we do it in the Regiment..”

Personally I think 12:00 is ‘better’ ..so the flapper falls down shut by gravity..then contemporaneously sealed by back pressure...whereas at the 6:00, back pressure must be depended upon to initially raise then shut the valve.

No discussion sought about various MCS or benefits of eg a Moose valve, built in flappers,Lil Mac ,etc. heard it all.

I've found I often end up somewhere closer to half-way to 6:00. Every flapper seems to have it's own ideas about when it's going to open and close, and by the time I find the right balance of height, etc the little metal staple is a mangled curl pointing 6:00ish, but rarely perfectly that direction...

So, I guess I'd say 6:00 for me- but my reason? ...desperation, I suppose...

My vote is for 12 O'clock so gravity helps to close it. It may not be a big factor but I'll take every edge I can get.

Pull the bugger out...use some small needle nose pliers to do some surgery...straighten the staple,..re hang the flapper under the crimp ..make it 110% perfect to sit flush and tight..no doubts 110% of the time.

I put a very small dot of unobtrusive color nailpolish on my blowstick mount topside..so I can see where the 12:00 hinge is and adjust if needed.

That's a solid idea...

I find it hard to believe that these things are still used today when we have more reliable devices to choose from.

And I have never cared which direction. And have never had a problem.

This discussion seems kind of silly.

Or you just get a Moose Valve and be done with worthless flapper valves that have to be hemped in just right or warp, degrade

If I could use a Moose Valve with my split stock, I would.

But as it stands, that doesn't work unless I want to put the valve somewhere down the tube and hope that the connection to the tube never fails.

As for how to orient the flapper valve, I put the blowpipe in and play. Don't think angle will make a difference.

Hard agree.

I'm going back to a flapper, to use my split stock in a sheep bag (Moose valve absolutely not possible). If I understand the topic, 12 O'clock refers to where the staple is along the inside uh..circumference I suppose, of the stock. If you're looking straight into the stock from playing position. So you could turn the blowpipe in the stock so the staple would be where you want it according to clock position. As opposed to the angle of the staple in relation to the flapper, which also seems to be being discussed? 12 O'clock for me I suppose
