Default Best Repair/Restore USA?

A buddy and I are in need of a good repair/restore in the Continental USA. We both have Ebony/Ivory and don't want to send out of Country. Who's the best?

Thanks Folks!

D.i.Y. Imho. Unless you need broken pins replaced or whole new pieces made.

What is your work scope?

For ivory...if it's just clean up I can pm you a solution I've used many times successfully. If it's a split.....well,..your dentist might share a bit of the right stuff with you. For chips ...a very smooth foam center emery board will easily smooth off sharp edges. I've always polished ivory parts with a dab of DuPont auto compound/wax on a dampened rag of cotton T shirt.

If refinishing varnished wood...strip it with remover ...add a few coats of thinned spar varnish for a lasting durable finish. Use a high cost 1/2" sable brush. Wait for dry low Rh weather ...dry well between coats.

If you must send it out....Roddy Maclellan in NC would get my vote.

What about removing old varnish and refinishing an antique set of pipes? The thought of DIY seems a bit scary for me. I have French-polished maple-sided speakers, but my antique pipes!

No worries. Abw is abw....strips just like it should.

Good rubs with 0000 steel wool, wipe down with mineral spirits ,clean combing with a tooth brush and a tack cloth, then multi coats of thinned spar varnish with a quality brush...no problem. Need dry Low Rh weather for best drying.

Same as a shop would do ( maybe not spar varnish though) except you pay a few hundred $ and not have the self satisfaction.

Yeah, I know it shouldn't be tricky. However, as the casein mounts and bits also need replacing, I may suck up costs and get Roddy MacLellan to do the work.

I don't know who "the best" is, but I've been happy with what Roddy MacLellan has done for me. He's trued bores and fixed a crack for me, and made various parts for people I know.

Tanx folks...

El G, I don't know how to repair hairline cracks or true bores but if I did I'd fix mine and anyone else who needed it. I like the idea though, just not tooled up for it.

Tucker

Looking at Mr. Bowen, he may have the solution we need

Yeah, I can only comment on those with whom I've dealt. In this regard, Ron Bowen is phenomenal, and excellent man to deal with.
