Many sanctioning bodies for competitive bands require matched uniforms, or have local unwritten customs that encourage bands to be matched. If you're not a competitive band or live where this isn't an issue, do whatever you want.

I wear an different organizational tartan than the FD's P&D's I perform with. Part of this is due to cost considerations of a proper kilt. But as they need pipers and I'm the only Firefighter (retired) I get a bit of leeway. As being of mixed Irish, French, & German ancestry, I suppose I could go with a solid color kilt and really confuse people on the Redneck Riviera.

Additionally I pipe with St. John's Pipers, not an organized band per say. We're multidenominational and we all wear various kilts, but tend towards a good time & practice together regularly.

As for required specific kilt pattern or tartan, that is more dependent upon how the Band is organized and how it functions.

If there was a joint band effort here... in my experience you could wear your own kilt and kit.

I have seen this with smaller pipe bands - in one case the kilts were the same but the socks were different - haven’t really seen this in the larger bands
