Default Never see old Naills

I occassionally see Naills for sale up to twenty years old or so, but rarely do I see them for sale from the 70-80s. What would a good set be worth today and how was their reputation back in the day? I know the chanters carried the day, but what about drones?

There are occasionally adverts in the PT for older Naill sets. They usually go for between £3000 - £3500.

Cheers -

As much as that? You are referring to Catalin (mounts, ferrules, endcaps) sets, which would be true of the 70s (and maybe some 80s) Naills, or silver mounted ones?

The ones I've seen have engraved silver and real ivory.

OK, that makes sense. When I was researching Naills, I read that the SI sets have thick-walled (not solid as some assume) silver mounts. With the current prices of silver, they would be expensive.

I bought mine new in 1986. Full ivory with nickle slides. Paid $1100 back then. They're not for sale.

Yes there's a catalin mounted set on Ebay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/David-Nail-D...item4ad663935b

The seller says they were made in 1989. I didn't know anybody was still using catalin then.

I know several makers had switched by then to the ivory-coloured brittle stuff.

My Naills are from '91 (bought them new) and are full catalin just like the set on eBay. These might have been older stock, however. At any rate, I was happy, because (yes) that other fake ivory was chipping all over the place on everyone's pipes what had them

I have a set of hand engraved 1980 silver and ivory Naills. The sound is excellent with great mid range harmonics. They are more of a challenge to tune than my Athertons, and less efficient but the sound is great especially with cane. Jim McGillvery, without seeing them, suggested a value of 6000$ but that they would more than likely fetch 4500$

Naill made the switch away from catalin quite late. I have a 1988 set in full catalin. By the early 90s, they'd stopped using it.
