So sad, it's hard to write anything at all.

There was a memorial service for David in Baltimore today. Considering how many people knew him online, I thought I would share the text of the program.

David would have been deeply amused by the fact that afterward there was a spontaneous discussion of the Donald MacDonald vs. Angus MacKay settings of The Piper's Warning to His Master, complete with bits of canntaireachd being sung back and forth.

Rest in peace, David.

===========================

J. DAVID HESTER

J. David Hester will forever be remembered for his piercing intellect, wit, compassion and the deep love he felt for his family and expansive circle of friends.

David grew up in Redlands California. After attending Eastern College, he graduated from the University of Redlands and later moved to the Bay Area, where he received his PhD in Religious Studies with a specialty in Rhetorical Analysis at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He founded and co-edited the international online journal, Queen: a journal of rhetoric and power, exploring gender, healing, religion and other contemporary topics. He was also co-director of the Rhetorical New Testament Project at the Institute of Antiquity and Christianity at the Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California.

David's work in New Testament rhetorical theory and gender issues was widely published. His dissertation was part of a significant series of monographs on critical issues in the New Testament, and he wrote articles and book reviews, and co-edited two books on rhetoric and hermeneutics. David presented papers at national meetings in biblical studies and was invited to lecture in South Africa and Great Britain.

While living in the Bay Area in the 1980s, David formed and played bass for the band Threnody and was executive producer the underground album Dark City, a compilation of four San Francisco underground bands, including his own. He played the violin and later took up the mandolin, which he enjoyed playing with Baltimore friends at house jams. A dedicated fan of David Bowie, he made sure that his children appreciated the rock star.

David met his wife Mary (Chrissy) Gardella at a swing dance in 1998. Their first dance sparked an immediate connection, and they were married in 2001. Soon after, David received a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to conduct research at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. He loved living abroad with his wife and two children, Cassiel and Anael, building relationships and sharing his curiosity about the world with his family.

David began playing the bagpipe at the age of 8, he was a talented and disciplined piper who believed that practice is the only path to excellence. A member of the Rockville, Maryland-based MacMillan Pipe Band, he worked ardently to revive Pibroch, a bagpipe performance genre informed by ancient scores. His book APC Guide to Pibroch: New Insights into an Ancient Art, is available for free, an expression of David's desire to share his knowledge and promote the genre.

David was a fierce defender of intellectual freedom, civil rights and social justice. He was an exceptional cook and enjoyed hosting social gatherings with his family. He is remembered for his magnetic personality, for looking people in the eyes in conversation and for his deep, fervent hugs. David was a thinker and a visionary, and will be profoundly missed by all whose lives he touched.
