Last year's event was a ground-breaker and, like all of the Winter Storm events, first class in every regard. As a competitor, the only thing l needed to concern myself with was my performance. Practice rooms, starting times, schedules for accompanists...all taken care of---no worries.
Having been 'first up', I was fortunate to have been able to watch the entire professional contest. I learned a lot from seeing my cohorts in action and, I believe, sharpened my skills as a result. I received excellent and constructive feedback from the judges..remarks that I could sink my teeth into.

I believe that if you can't learn something as player, or spectator, at this event, you need to check your pulse.

Big Johnny Rowe, Duncan Gibson, and yours truly, have been working together to put together a comprehensive, hands-on workshop for bass players at every level.

I think I can speak for the three of us and say that we are really looking forward to a weekend full of drumming and camaraderie.

I highly encourage anyone who is: sitting on the fence; mulling things over; kicking the idea around; etc; to get in the game!

Look forward to seeing you there!

Mike you are bang on...no pun intended...about the contests. You don't need to worry about a thing except yourself. I wish I could be there this year again, but alas I cannot. I plan on being back in 2009 though. That gives me a whole year to practice up .

Even though I am currently without band (too busy these days) I will be there for the tenor workshops and the concert. I decided I should take a trip for myself, and there's no place I'd rather go that Kansas City in January--really--after hearing the great reviews of Winter Storms past.

Would love to go again this year, the bass contest was great fun to do and I enjoyed seeing everyone. Will be cheering on from the sidelines for a while this season so will see you all in 2009. Atlanta will be well-represented in both bass and tenor contests!
